57mm Ecolite ring for the Skywatcher Evoguide 50ED:
It is doing what it is supposed to do for a properly mounted guide scope. Looks good and is solid as a rock. The main scope can now do what it is told to do.

As I posted earlier, when I bought my Skymax 180 on super sale at Amazon I was quite pleased with its performance and especially its price. One glaring item, however, was the undersized stock dovetail, as well as the inherent clumsiness of a large and slippery OTA with virtually nothing to grab onto to keep you from dropping it in the night.
First issue was how to replace the dovetail given its flimsy and internally questionable mounting. I was very reluctant to unscrew the dovetail and swap it for a Losmandy after the discussions I had with ES tech-support. They raised the possibility of having something come loose inside the OTA once I unscrewed the dovetail. They also said, and I agreed, that opening the closed system if something came loose was a bad idea.
Next issue was the inherently slippery and awkward way the OTA was handled, to say nothing as to my preference for rings rather than just a fixed dovetail as that would allow you to adjust your viewing position by rotating the OTA position by adjusting the rings.
There was a source to address both issues.
I had previously worked with Rouz Astro to change rings and other accessories to various refractors I owed, so I reached out to Rouz and asked for his suggestions. He said to try a set of his new non-hinged rings, which would have sufficient clearance at the bottom to allow me to leave the original dovetail and its negligible weight in place. After a little trial and error )turned out that the official measurements on OTA diameter were not accurate and given the placement of the existing dovetail the rear ring in order to clear that would have to fit on the slightly larger, white rear section of the OTA.
Once I could add the rings I could add a smaller upper dovetail and a scope The next item was a scope handle that would hook up to upper dovetail. I added a mount from Rouz to mount a Telrad in addition to the stock finder. (I added the two clamps on the upper dovetail on each side of the scope handle even though they are not really necessary but a factor of my paranoia to keep the scope handle from coming loose and sliding along the dovetail. Completely unnecessary but comforting,)
The rings set is incredibly weight the only other added weight other than the two speed focuser is the CNC Losmandy dovetail, which probably could be replaced by a less beefy and lighter carbon fiber version.
I have an inveterate tinkerer and I’m quite happy with the product of my latest tinkering. One thing for sure is, I will not drop this in the dark a rather expensive way to end the evening.

The carbon fiber used on the Levy gave me the idea to reach out to my friend at Rouz Astro and ask about a carbon fiber ring and dovetail replacement set. As always, Rouz asked me to check the actual diameter of the OTA before he started to work. I found that it is slightly larger than listed in the various reviews and original data from the maker. Once we got that worked out Rouz began to make the rings and sent top and bottom Vixen style dovetails so I could use the scope on a variety of my light to medium mounts. Rouz did so although telling me he was going to make the bottom dovetail stronger than usual for safety sake.
When they arrived, I put the set together and put it next to the original set. The new set weighs virtually nothing in comparison to the ex Russian MBT.
The two rings fit perfectly with just a small gap as Ross recommends between the ends. (These rings are his new no – hinged variety, which are less expensive and also slightly less heavy. Mounting them was quite easy.)
The scope now moves and mounts easily. All in all I am very pleased with the updating of this classic .
